I'm looking to avoid crowds since I will only be connecting in Paris and I'm wondering if the monument is visible from most areas in the central Paris area.

There's no downtown, and if you mean the city centre then no, the tower is visible from the near area and the last sight you get as you go away if from the Concorde place, then you can get a glimpse of it between buildings if you go up and down the hills but most of the time it is hidden by the buildings. If you live in Paris on one of the hills you can have a superb view of the city and the Eiffel tower.

The best way to see it from afar is from the stairs in front of the cathedral at the top of the Montmartre hill.

The Eiffel Tower can be seen from just about anywhere in Paris as long as there are no buildings in the way, so upper stories of buildings often have a few, as do many streets. It's the tallest structure in Paris by far.

There really is no 'downtown' in Paris. One of the best places to see the Eiffel Tower is from Trocadero, across the river from the tower.

Yes it is visible from ALL of Paris b/c of its hight and the fact that paris is flat except for one hill. As long as there is not a building right infrint of you.
